The Dimensions of Creativity

Abstract

An arithmetical argument is used to show that the dimension of the phase space needed to represent creative activity in the human brain is much larger than that of the phase space of neuronal activity. This implies that the dynamics of creative activity cannot be understood by studying only the behavior of the brain's neurons. Furthermore, the dimension of creative activity is immense in a certain technical sense, which implies that it cannot be precisely modelled. Thus creative activity is inherently unpredictable.
